KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s Metro Transit service is doing a reassessment to see if they can provide service improvements in the wake of the pandemic and in reaction to societal changes.
Director Sean McBride says they recently received a report from a consultant who reviewed their current routes and made other recommendations, like using solar power to fuel electric buses.
They will soon be doing a community survey and asking for public input. Another idea is adding “micro-mobility”, an uber-like service that is accessible through an app that would pick you up and take you to a nearby destination or the nearest bus stop.
Portage City Council Member Chris Burns, who sits on the Transit Board, says that would fill in service gaps.
McBride says its being tried out in Muskegon, Grand Rapids and a few other communities. And they are trying now to figure out if it would be sustainable here.
He says it would be a couple of years before it’s in service, if they do go with it.
