PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Portage City Council has been putting in a lot of overtime lately, crafting next year’s city budget and searching for a City Manager.
Both those efforts could come to a head Tuesday night, May 10, as the Council will hold a public hearing on their $88-million dollar spending plan for the 22-23 fiscal year, and then take the vote. It’s a 15% increase over last year’s budget, due mainly to a big increase in capital spending.
They plan to spend over 30-million on infrastructure, nearly as much as their General fund Budget.
The Council interviewed the three finalists for City Manager last Thursday, May 5. And they could make their final pick during this meeting, which would trigger final background checks and contract negotiations with the Candidate, with the actual hiring to come after those steps are completed.
The finalists are Jade Smith, Patrick McGinnis and Peter Dame, who all currently hold municipal administrative jobs in Michigan.
“I wanted to thank this council for their professionalism, their sense of integrity, and their willingness to work as a team. It makes my job up her a lot easier,” said Portage City Mayor Patricia Randall, who has led both efforts.
“The hiring for a new city manager will impact the city and trajectory of this city for years to come,” continued Randall who says that while the Budget is the biggest thing the Council does annually, picking a new Chief administrator is even bigger.
