KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A standoff on Saturday, May 7, had a positive ending when a 38-year-old Kalamazoo man surrendered himself to police.
Authorities say it all started around 3:30 p.m. when officer with the Township of Kalamazoo Police Department were investigating a report of a felonious assault in the 3800 block of Gull road where the suspect allegedly threatened someone with a firearm.
Officers found the suspect a short time later at a local business and tried to make contact with him. The suspect then resisted officers, got into his vehicle and attempted to run officers over before crashing into a police car and fleeing the scene.
Officer pursued the vehicle when the suspect led them to a nearby apartment complex, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers then chased the suspect who ran into an occupied residence, forced out the homeowner, and then barricaded himself inside.
The Kalamazoo Metro SWAT Team was called to the scene to assist in negotiations. After a several hour standoff, the suspect surrendered to police was taken into custody without incident.
The 38 year old Kalamazoo resident was transported and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
The investigation will be submitted to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges to include: Felonious Assault, Resisting and Obstructing Police
Causing Injury, Assault with Intent to Murder, Fleeing an Eluding, Home Invasion, Damage to Police Property, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felony Firearm, Carrying
a Concealed Weapon, and Possession of Narcotics.
No victim injuries were reported. Police officers involved in this investigation received minor injuries. The suspect was not injured in this incident.
Assisting agencies included the Kalamazoo Metro SWAT TEAM, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, Western Michigan University Police, and the Michigan State Police.
