KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The daily COVID-19 case rate locally has risen every day for eight straight days, according to the latest data released by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
In Kalamazoo County, Health Officer Jim Rutherford says new infections are being driven predominantly by people 25 to 45-years-old. There is a smaller, but elevated increase in case rates among 15 to 19-year-olds.
State data shows 80 new cases were detected in Kalamazoo County Tuesday. It’s the highest single day total since February, according to the MDHHS. Rutherford says the BA.2 subvariant has contributed to the rise in cases.
The highly contagious variant is also tied to more than one in three new COVID-19 cases in the U.S last week, according to health officials.
Rutherford says “We’re hopeful it’s a small blip and not headed sideways.”
Since April 25, more than 100 Kalamazoo Public Schools students have tested positive for COVID-19, and Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri told the Board of Education Wednesday that a recent high school prom held off-campus with no mask mandate turned into a super spreader event.
