KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — County Commissioner Tami Rae will be appearing on the August Primary ballot in District 1 for re-election, despite challenges to her candidacy.
Kalamazoo County Clerk Meredith Place notified Rae Friday that opponents were challenging the address she gave on her application form, and some of the signatures on her petitions. But Place announced Wednesday morning, May 4, at the Elections Board Meeting that Rae will be on the ballot. Rae says she is relieved.
Rae’s attorney told the Board that they did not believe there was any racial or political intent behind the clerk’s handling of the matter, but Rae wasn’t so sure.
Place Told the Election Board its her duty to investigate challenges. And after a review and new information from Rae, she determined she was qualified.
In a written statement she added, ”Election integrity and election security remain my highest priorities and I commend our capable staff and legal team for a fair, thorough and transparent review of these challenges.”
A couple dozen supporters appeared at the Elections Board meeting on Rae’s behalf.
With the races now set, it’s up to voters now to decide at the August primary to narrow the field, and again in November to pick the Commissioners.
The only candidate running unopposed is incumbent Democrat Monteze Morales in the newly drawn 3rd district.
