KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Office of Emergency Management and other authorities are keeping an eye on river and stream levels in anticipation of possible minor area flooding over the next few days.
This cautionary measure is being prompted by the recent amount of snow and rainfall along with higher temperatures at the beginning of the week.
OEM officials along with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office have been in constant contact with other local partners, including the operators of Morrow Dam, located upstream of Comstock on the Kalamazoo River. So far, dam operators have increased flows into the river to draw down water levels on Morrow Pond, giving them some room to absorb increased upstream flows should future rainfall amounts reach higher than those currently expected over the next couple of days.
Authorities say the situation is currently stable and expect it to remain so, but still advise caution around areas prone to flooding, especially low-lying roadways near the river, with some residences and businesses possibly seeing some minor impacts.
