AUGUSTA, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Center in Augusta is working to provide a better camp experience for those with sensory needs or invisible disabilities.
The center has teamed with an organization called KultureCity, making it them the first YMCA to train and become sensory-inclusive.
KultureCity is a non-profit organization recognized throughout the nation for utilizing its resources to revolutionize and effect change in the community for individuals with sensory needs or those with invisible disabilities. The program’s training focuses on instilling understanding, acceptance, and empathy in first responders toward those who have sensory needs. The goal of this training is to enhance future interactions between law enforcement and the community to create the best outcomes.

Officials with Sherman Lake YMCA say they are committed to finding new and innovative ways to positively impact the lives of youth. Their staff recently completed training and an assessment certifying them on sensory inclusive needs. They also have sensory bags with tools to manage sensory overload situations.
As the newest YMCA Summer Camp in the state of Michigan, they have 365 acres of woodlands, prairie, and lakefront on Sherman Lake.
