MATTAWAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Despite a recommendation from their local health department, the Mattawan Consolidated School District will be dropping its district-wide mask mandate effective next Monday, February 21.
Superintendent Randy Fleenor told WWMT-TV the change comes because of the rapid decline in COVID-19 rates and new information about the effectiveness of mitigation measures.
Fleenor said district officials looked at internal data and found fewer students and staff were coming down with the disease. In the last four weeks, the average number of COVID-19 cases per day in Michigan has dropped by almost 85% percent, from 17,589 to 2,660.
Van Buren County Health Officer Danielle Perskey said the county is still recommending universal masking in schools.
Kalamazoo Public Schools announced it will keep masking requirements in place for the remainder of the school year. Comstock Public Schools also has a mask mandates, while a Portage Public Schools spokesperson said district officials are set to take a look at the district’s mask mandate over Spring Break.
