KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – While most Kalamazoo County school districts are returning to classes after Wednesday’s storm that dumped up to one foot of snow in some area, most all districts in St. Joseph County are closed again Friday.
John Lindsey, managing director for the St. Joseph County Road Commission, said he only had 25 plow truck drivers available to clear the roads. That meant only one shift running in the county.
Climax Scotts, Galesburg Augusta, and Schoolcraft in Kalamazoo County are closed again Friday.
The state education department allows schools six days a year to close for emergencies like a winter storm. Schools can petition the state for three additional days if they exceed the allotted six. Portage Public Schools has used three snow days, while Kalamazoo Public Schools has had four districtwide closures.
For Mattawan Consolidated Schools, Thursday’s snow day was their their seventh closure this year. Superintendent Randy Fleenor said the district has closed five days for weather and two days to investigate threats made towards the district, but they plan to petition for forgiveness for those two threat days.
Hamilton Community Schools in Allegan County is at the six day threshold.
