KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – While most schools in the region are still closed today, the National Weather Service cancelled its Winter Storm Warning after snowfall dissipated overnight.
Snow totals from around the area ranged from 6 to almost 13 inches Wednesday. While temperatures Wednesday ranged from the low 30’s to upper 20’s, colder air moved in overnight and will last into the weekend.
Besides schools, many governmental offices will remain closed Thursday, including Kalamazoo City Hall and other city facilities, as well as Kalamazoo County governmental offices.
Officials with two area homeless shelters say the advance warning they received for this week’s snowstorm was key in helping prepare to serve more people.
Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries and the Haven of Rest in Battle Creek both say getting people experiencing homelessness to stay in the shelter is a team effort, especially as temperatures drop. John Simpson, chief operating officer with Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries, told WOOD-TV 8 that administrators change the rules to allow more people to stay.
Officials from both shelters say the need for donations is always high, from winter clothing to food and toiletries. To make a donation, you can go to the Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries and Haven of Rest websites.
