KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Local high school artists have the opportunity to see their work on display in the High School Area Show (HSAS) exhibition at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (KIA). The KIA is now accepting applications through Monday, February 28, 2022.
Participation in the contest allows eligible artists the opportunity to win scholarships for summer programs and even college admission. In 2021, in collaboration with regional colleges and universities, the KIA facilitated the offering of nearly $1.7 million in student scholarship support.
Starting with the 2022 HSAS, there will be a new scholarship in memory of local art educator Doris Miller. For over 40 years, Miller served thousands of art students as a Kalamazoo Public School art teacher and administrator.
High school artists residing in Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties can submit their work online through CaFE, with a small entry fee of $3 per artwork. Submissions will be juried by Le Tran, the 2021 National Secondary Art Educator of the Year.
The HSAS will be exhibited jointly with Young Artists of Kalamazoo County (YAKC) on view from April 9 through May 22, 2022. Enjoyed by visitors of all ages, these exhibitions have been a KIA tradition for decades. YAKC features works by K-8 students and acknowledges the dedication of elementary and middle school art teachers. As in previous years, the KIA is only accepting artworks for YAKC through local art educators.
