KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo Public Schools student reportedly brought an aerosol gun onto a school bus Tuesday, and now faces suspension.
WWMT-TV reports that parents of Maple Street Magnet School of the Arts students said they’ve gotten three robocalls in the past month regarding safety concerns on school grounds. Some students apparently told their parents they thought the gun was real.
In a robocall to parents, principal Jeff Boggan said, “The safety and security of our students are very important to us. No one was hurt and the student will face consequences according to our student code of conduct. Please remind your child how serious it is to bring any type of weapon to school.”
On November 30, school officials found bullets outside Maple Street Magnet. They said no weapons were found and no shots were fired. The school was closed early for the day. The student responsible faced disciplinary action.
Kalamazoo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri recently sent a letter to families about the uptick in violence.
“Children should know that we take their safety seriously,” she said. “Our safety plan has been reviewed and approved with high marks by the county and state.”
