A USDA announcement on prevented planting acres has drawn bipartisan approval.
Senate Ag Chair Debbie Stabenow and committee member John Thune say the Risk Management Agency is implementing their recommendation to remove the November 1st restriction for harvesting or grazing cover crops on prevented plant acres. That gives more flexibility to growers in northern parts of the country. Senator Stabenow said USDA will now encourage more cover cropping by ensuring growers don’t face a penalty when extreme weather causes them to miss the planting season.
The result will be healthier soils, less erosion and better capacity to capture carbon. The two senators have worked together for several years to get the November 1st restriction removed.
