UPDATE: Kalamazoo Township Police have identified the shooter and the victim in Thursday night’s incident. According to authorities, 54 year old Eric Minies first shot 52 year old Marta Melero-Gomez, then turned the gun on himself. Melero-Gomez remains in critical condition at a Kalamazoo area hospital.
KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Township Police say a man shot a woman and then took his own life last night after a domestic incident in the Cloisters Apartment complex off West Main Street.
Neighbors reported shots fired around 9:15 p.m. Thursday. Officers evacuated the area when they arrived. Kalamazoo Metro SWAT members were able to remove two minors who remained in the residence.
Police Chief Bryan Ergang says it appears the suspect shot the female adult victim, and then shot himself. The woman was transported to a Kalamazoo hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Detectives from Kalamazoo Township are currently investigating the incident and the case remains open.
Kalamazoo Township Police were assisted at the scene by the Kalamazoo Township Fire Department, the Michigan State Police, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo Metro SWAT, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, Kalamazoo Metro Transit, and Life EMS.
Chief Ergang says the two children removed from the scene have been temporarily placed with family.
