BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Friends and family members of 29-year-old Xavier West held a vigil Monday night outside of the Cricket Club bar on West Michigan Avenue in downtown Battle Creek. They are demanding action after West was shot to death by a bar security staff member just after midnight on Thanksgiving morning as he was trying to break up a fight.
Battle Creek Police continue to investigate. They said in a press release issued hours after the shooting that a number of customers physically fought with bar security staff and, during the fight, one person fired two shots from a handgun.
West died from his injuries at Bronson Battle Creek Hospital.
Police recovered the gun at the scene, and officers took the person who fired the shots to the Battle Creek Police Department for an interview.
