KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Over $11,000 has been raised by a GoFundMe campaign for a Kalamazoo family after their apartment was damaged during a police stand-off with a shooting suspect a week ago today.
Several local agencies have also been collecting household items for Andrea Young and her five children, who have since been helped to relocate to a new address.
The rental on Washington Avenue had to be demolished after a 16-hour standoff and gunfight, which ended when suspect Alex Rawls shot himself rather than be captured.
Both the City and the county have declared gun violence a health emergency and Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson says preventing it is his #1 priority.
It may come up when the new City Commission meets this evening.
Commissioners will also get their first look at a new city ordinance regulating emergency shelters for the homeless. Non-profit and church organizations have expressed a willingness to set up emergency shelters.
