KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo College men’s soccer team advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Hope Flying Dutchmen Wednesday night at MacKenzie Field.
The Hornets (11-3-3) opened the scoring in the 36th minute. Chad Ewing, positioned to the right of the Hope goal, took a pass from Alex Wallace and deposited it past the diving Dutch keeper into the left side of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Aidan Gillig put the game away in the 80th minute when he collected a loose ball from just outside the penalty arc and drilled the ball with his left foot over the leaping keeper.
Kalamazoo was able to take advantage of its chances in a statistically close game. Kalamazoo had a slight advantage in shots (9-8) and saves (5-4), while Hope had two corner kicks to the Hornets’ one and committed 13 fouls to K’s 12.
Kalamazoo’s Gavin Houtkooper, recently named the MIAA Newcomer of the Year, collected his fifth shutout of the season in goal. Ewing paced the Hornets with three shots.
The Hornets will host the MIAA finals on Saturday against Trine, who defeated No. 1 seed Calvin Wednesday night. The time is to be determined.
