HARTFORD MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Hartford Public Schools have become the latest area school district to begin the process of retiring an Indian mascot.
District officials sent out a letter to parents that indicated the Indian mascot is slated to be retired at the end of the current school year, and stated that discussions with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi had led to the decision to retire the mascot.
The district is set to begin exploration of a new mascot this month.
Hartford joins Paw Paw, Athens, Saugatuck, and Marshall as area districts who have retired Indian mascots.
