BOWLING GREEN, OH (WKZO AM/FM) — The Western Michigan men’s soccer team battled Bowling Green to a 1-1 tie on the road on Saturday night.
The Broncos struck first on a goal by Max Keenan in the 31st minute. Keenan finished off a cross from Philip Smith for his fourth goal of the season, tying him for the team lead.
WMU Took its lead into the second half but Roberto Fernandez Garrido equalized on a bicycle kick from inside the box to tie it up in the 74th minute.
Minutes later BGSU’s Zach Buescher was issued a red card after a hard tackle on a Bronco to give WMU a one-man advantage for the rest of the game.
With the Falcons down a man Western Michigan picked up the pressure and ended up with eight total shots in the second half, but only landed one on net. WMU was limited to just one shot in each of the overtime periods before settling for a draw.
“We came down knowing we needed three points and we leave with one,” said head coach Chad Wiseman. “Soccer is a funny game. We didn’t lose but it sure kind of feels like we did.”
The Broncos outshot the Falcons 22-11 overall and had an advantage of 8-5 in shots on goal.
“We created the chances to win the game. We simply did not have the quality needed in those moments and we had lots of them. We battled hard. The field conditions and the weather both influenced how the game was played out over 110 minutes. We gave everything we had.”
