MUSKEGON, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Another labor shortage is possibly on the horizon as we approach the winter months. Some municipalities in West Michigan are expected to see a shortage of snowplow drivers.
In Ottawa and Muskegon counties, the Road Commissions say retirements from the profession and fewer new drivers applying could lead to fewer plows out on the roads to clear snow this winter. Both counties are offering incentives and higher wages to try to entice more people to apply for the job openings.
There have also been reports of shortages of snowplow drivers on the east side of the state. The Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas are not seeing shortages of drivers, but other problems could impact snow removal across the entire state. Potential COVID-19 outbreaks among Road Commissions and shortages of parts needed to repair snowplow trucks could impact efforts during the winter season.
