A new initiative to help farmers address climate change was the big take-away from Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in a speech this week at Colorado State University.
He said USDA is investing in a series of pilot projects which will provide incentives to implement climate smart conservation practices on working lands and to quantify and monitor carbon and greenhouse gas benefits associated with those practices. The department will be getting stakeholder input over the next 30 days to determine how the partnerships will be set up and will then initiate a series of test programs over the next six months.
The secretary also announced $3 billion in additional funding to address issues such as drought, supply chain disruptions and nutrition.
