Man accused of shooting girlfriend near liquor store in Dowagiac during domestic dispute

DOWAGIAC, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Authorities in Dowagiac say a woman was shot in a parking lot near a liquor store Saturday evening.

Police responded to Dowagiac Liquor on Spruce St. at around 10:30 and found a victim who said she had gotten into a fight with her boyfriend. Investigators said the victim was driving a vehicle while the suspect, 45-year-old Robert J. Smith III was outside the vehicle. At some point, Smith started firing gunshots into the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Police are still looking for Smith and have released a photo. They warn the public that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
