Residents in nine states including Michigan need to be alert to another invasive pest.
The box tree moth may have been imported from Canada this spring in shipments to lawn and garden sites where they were sold and potentially transported to wider areas. USDA is taking steps to find and destroy infested boxwoods but many of the decorative shrubs have been sold and dispersed. Boxwood trees are actually shrubs and are often trimmed for decorative purposes in home landscapes.
Adult moths typically have white wings with a dark brown border, but can sometimes be all brown with a small white streak on each wing. They’re native to Asia but are now an invasive species in Europe and Canada – and possibly, in the U.S. as well.
