While all of us worry about being swarmed by the latest round of just-hatched mosquitoes, there’s another threat lurking in the weeds and high grass.
The Centers for Disease Control tells everyone venturing outdoors this summer to be aware of the threat posed by ticks. Entomologists warn that these small arachnids carry with them a soup of pathogens and microbes that pose problems for humans and animals. Lime disease is the most well-known of tick-borne illnesses but scientists are finding new ones all the time. Six kinds of ticks call Southwest Michigan home.
Precautions against a tick bite are similar to those helping you avoid mosquito bites – wear long-sleeved shirts and pants in wooded and grassy areas to leave as little skin exposed as possible.
