KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Schools said farewell to two of their top administrators this weekend during a retirement party at Mayor’s Riverfront Park.
Cindy Green started as a teacher and worked her way up to Assistant Superintendent before she retired earlier this month. Gary Start signed the checks and kept books for 36 years, and was serving as Interim Superintendent last year when the pandemic hit.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri says Kalamazoo Public Schools has a history of keeping their retirees involved.
“They’re a part of the KPS family and will be coming back to support us in some capacity or another. So don’t be sad, they’re not going to far. That’s what I keep telling myself.”
On hand for this weekend’s party was former KPS Superintendent and now State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Micheal Rice…
“Gary Start and Cindy Green are enormous in the history of Kalamazoo Public Schools. Not just the schools, but the community. And not just the community, but most importantly for are young people.”
Start and Green worked a combined 72 years at Kalamazoo Public Schools and say The Kalamazoo Promise has made all the difference for the future trajectory of the district.
