Wind turbines are a controversial addition to the rural landscape. After their appearance in the past several decades some municipalities banned them citing concerns over noise, esthetics and danger to birds.
Meanwhile, those favoring the devices for harnessing wind energy point to a major positive economic impact. Michael Mancuso with Iowa Western Community College says most farmers who’ve leased land for wind energy production are glad they did. He told the Senate Ag Committee these producers probably have dealt with the economic storm produced by the pandemic better than those who didn’t.
In addition, the wind energy business has spawned a demand for trained local workers for installation and maintenance.
