GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Air Quality alerts and Fire Weather Watches have been in effect across parts of Michigan, as extremely dry conditions continue amidst a heatwave.
Residents in Allegan, Cass, Kent, Ottawa, and Van Buren counties, and counties to the north along the Lake Michigan shore, have been asked to voluntarily avoid using gas-powered equipment, such as lawnmowers and weed-whackers, and to also avoid topping off fuel tanks.
Fire Weather watches have been in effect for most counties north of Grand Rapids in the Lower Peninsula as conditions are ripe for wildfires to happen. Even though those alerts are not in effect in southwest Michigan, outdoor burning of any kind is discouraged as dry conditions continue. A little bit of relief from severe drought conditions could come this week with a chance for some showers and thunderstorms headed to the Great Lakes region.
