KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County commissioners will be voting on a resolution soon that could outlaw a wild animal hunting event that takes place in the Galesburg area every year. Considered the largest event of its kind in Michigan, teams of hunters come to the area to kill varmints like coyotes, foxes, skunks, opossums, and other wild creatures to win prizes. Local Veterinarian Cathy Tyson calls it “horrific”.
“…because I don’t have another word for a form of entertainment that finds recreation in the slaughter of hundreds of innocent animals.”
Others say it’s gruesome, unethical, and bad sportsmanship. County Commissioner Mike Quinn has proposed a resolution that also urges the state to outlaw similar events in other areas of Michigan.
“(There’s) no value as far as wildlife management, no matter what they are claiming. They are simply killing for the sake of killing.”
The Galesburg area hunt is called The Great Lakes Predator Challenge. 160 teams participated the last time it was held.
