KANSAS CITY, MO (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kansas Royals took the weekend series over the Detroit Tigers Sunday, after Carlos Santana belted a two-run homer off of Michael Fulmer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give KC a 3-2 home win.
Kansas City was held to only three hits and one run before the ninth when Whit Merrifield led off with an infield single before Santana belted the homer. The Royals took two of the three games in the weekend series.
The Tigers scored twice in the first with RBI-singles from Jeimer Candelario and Eric Haase. Starting pitcher Casey Mize pitched one-run, three-hit ball for six-and-a-third innings, but did not factor in the decision.
Both the Royals and Tigers wore special jerseys to honor the Detroit Stars and Kansas City Monarchs as part of the annual Salute to the Negro Leagues game in Kansas City.
The Tigers struggled to bring in runs as they stranded nine runners and were two for 11 with runners in scoring position.
Detroit aims to regroup as they return home to host Cleveland in the first of a four-game series with the Indians starting tonight. The opening pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
