MIDLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Governor Gretchen Whitmer gave an update on the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the latest in vaccination efforts. Instead of tying four phases of lifting restrictions to the percentage of Michigan residents who have been vaccinated, she has set dates.
The biggest change involves outdoor capacity limits. The Governor said that the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is planning to lift outdoor capacity limits on June 1. By the beginning of July, Michigan’s mask order is expected to be lifted by health officials. Indoor capacity will continue at 50% throughout the month of June.
As of Wednesday, 56.8% of Michigan residents 16 and older had received at least their first vaccination shot. Michigan marked 55% for vaccinations on May 10, which moved the state past phase one of the plan. On Monday, May 24, anyone who had been working remotely will be allowed to resume in-person employment at all businesses in the state.
The briefing took place in Midland, where one year ago massive floods devastated the region. It happened after the Edenville and Sanford Dams in Midland County failed during heavy rainfall. Nearly 11,000 people had to evacuate their homes.
The Governor was joined by Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, Midland Mayor Maureen Donker, CEO and Chairman of Dow Jim Fitterling, Great Lakes Bay Region Alliance President Matt Felan, and President and General Manager of Dow Diamond Chris Mundhenk.
