KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Bike Week may be over now, but bike safety must still be observed.
That’s according to Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller, who spoke on the subject with WKZO Wednesday morning. He referred to a fatal bike/vehicle crash that took place last week.
“Sadly, there was a loss of life this last week in Kalamazoo County, and we want to remember that the rules of the road are so important to follow,” Fuller said. “The rules for drivers are pay attention to the roadway, keep devices out of our hands, not to be distracted in any way, get from point A to point B without hurting ourselves or others.”
Fuller says there are rules cyclists must follow, as well.
“Make sure you’re following the road rules, have lights on or flashing red lights in the back of you bicycle, and be seen,” Fuller said. “It’s so important, we remind people over and over, that bicyclists have the same rights as a car, and everyone has to follow the rules.”
Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office has recently received a grant from the Bike Friendly Kalamazoo Group to promote bike safety.
“The grant will be used for promotional information at the National Night Out,” Fuller said. “In fact, we’ve invited that group to attend our National Night Out celebration this year. We’re trying to have two of them, they’re in August, first week of August every year. We’re trying to have one in Oshtemo and one in Comstock. We will have the bike safety people there, checking helmets and bikes for safety.”
