EDWARDSBURG, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — UPDATE: Police in Cass County have released the name of the teenage victim in this case, according to a report from MLive Monday afternoon.
According to the report, the victim has been identified as 15-year-old Jessica Heroy of Vandalia, about 16 miles from the shooting in Edwardsburg.
Police say she had no relation to the 12-year-old shooter, but were friends, according to the report.
The shooting is believed to have occurred when a firearm had apparently been taken out of a gun safe. The boy allegedly fired the gun believing it was unloaded, resulting in Heroy’s injury and death.
The case remains under investigation at this time, and police told MLive that there is currently nothing new to report.

Cass County authorities say a 12-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a 15-year-old girl at a home in Edwardsburg over the weekend.
Investigators say the incident occurred at around 1:45 Sunday afternoon at a home on Maple Street. A firearm had apparently been taken out of a safe. The boy, who believed the gun was not loaded, fired the gun at the girl who died from her injuries.
Investigators questioned the boy but reportedly have not taken him into custody, according to several media outlets. The Cass County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
