CHIKAMING TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday, Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers were involved in a vehicle pursuit that resulted in a crash on the I-94 Freeway westbound near Lakeside Road (mile marker #6) around 4:00 p.m. in Chikaming Township, Berrien County.
Officials say that while on patrol, troopers were provided information about a possible stolen vehicle traveling westbound on I-94 Freeway near Red Arrow Highway. After a brief search, the vehicle was observed with one male occupant.
Troopers confirmed the vehicle and plate were stolen and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, which then led to a high-speed vehicle pursuit.
Troopers continued to pursue the stolen vehicle several miles until the driver appeared to deliberately crash into the guardrails on the right shoulder of the roadway near Lakeside Road.
The impact of that collision caused the driver of the vehicle to lose control, cross back over three lanes of travel and come to a stop after colliding a second time into the median cable barrier.
Preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was reported stolen by Enterprise Rental to the Waterford Township Police Department in March after the driver failed to return it.
The driver, a 66-year-old man from Farmington, MI, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
He was transported to Spectrum Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph for medical care.
Due to the driver’s injuries and other circumstances, police say he will not be arrested at this time.
A copy of the report will be forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review and various charges, including Fleeing & Eluding.
This investigation remains open.
