PARCHMENT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A mother and daughter, and their families, have teamed up to open a pair of new businesses in Parchment. The new restaurant and salon opened on Shoppers Ln. simultaneously Saturday, April 10.

Josie’s Southern Comfort Food – Parchment, Michigan – Brandon James WKZO
The restaurant, Josie’s Southern Comfort Food, is owned and operated by Denise Hensley. She says the eatery, boasting authentic southern comfort food favorites, is named after her mother Josephine and that many of the items on the menu are inspired by or come directly from her mother’s recipes. After her mother passed away a few years ago, Denise wanted to continue her legacy and the idea to open a restaurant was born.
Josephine grew up in Mississippi and spent most of her life cooking. She and her family moved to Michigan in the late 1950s, but she continued to cook her southern favorites for her family. Denise began learning many of her recipes and says she “learned from the best” regarding her mother’s talents for making authentic southern dishes and aimed to continue her legacy.
You may recognize the name, because prior to the brick and mortar restaurant, Denise has participated in several events in the Kalamazoo area, serving up many of the same dishes that the restaurant offers. Those events include local festivals, wedding receptions, and food trucks.

Lulubarbz Boutique – Parchment, Michigan – Brandon James WKZO
Just a couple of doors down, Hensley’s daughter, Daneshia Moore, owns and operates a new salon called Lulubarb’z Boutique. The 32-year-old calls it a one-stop hair, skin, and beauty supply store, offering several natural products related to women’s beauty. She also provides hair service, including cuts, styling, extensions, and coloring in the salon. Daneshia says she has always been passionate about hair care and that it’s a dream come true to share her knowledge and creativity related to it with the community.
In both businesses, you can sense how close this family is and how much they share their passions for the various endeavors they participate in. Both Denise and Daneshia said they look forward to developing personal relationships with the community and developing a bond as they get to know their customers.
