BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A planned roundabout for an area of Battle Creek will not be happening now after a decision by city commissioners based on negative feedback about the idea from many residents. In a 6-3 vote, the project at the intersection of Emmett Street and North Avenue was voted down.
The idea for a roundabout was originally recommended at the intersection through an independent audit to help traffic flow and improve safety for pedestrians. In 2018, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle in that area. But the majority of Battle Creek city leaders felt given the community’s disapproval, that it was their role as elected officials to vote it down.
Several roundabouts have been constructed in the Kalamazoo area in recent years. Despite some grumblings in the community early on, most drivers have become used to them by now.
