Dogs can prove valuable to a farm or ranch for several reasons but often their most essential role is that of companionship.
These days of increased social isolation are likely to bring this to the fore. For four years the American Farm Bureau at convention time along with the support of Purina has presented the Farm Dog of the Year contest. The winner receives a year’s worth of Purina dog food and $5000 in prize money in ceremonies held in January.
Event organizers say the canine contestants’ attributes should include helpfulness to the farmer and the farm family as well as playfulness and obedience. Complete guidelines are available online at ‘www.fb.org.’
