DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Red Cross is reporting that, despite the challenges of 2020, more than 11,000 local volunteers helped carry out its various projects in Michigan.
Those projects all include blood donation events, responses to local house fires and more.
On Monday, the Red Cross announced that it will be teaming up with Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) through March to help raise funds in continuing these efforts.
On Wednesday, March 3, ten percent of sales at BWW locations will go to support the mission of the Red Cross. Throughout the month, customers can choose to round up their bill and all proceeds will benefit the Red Cross of Michigan.
“Through the trials of the last year, our local Red Cross volunteers and blood donors stepped up to care for their neighbors,” Regional Chief Executive Officer Mary Lynn Foster said in a statement. “From emergencies like family home fires to critical blood shortages, our local heroes were there to help. For nearly 80 years, U.S. presidents have proclaimed March as Red Cross Month to recognize people giving back through its lifesaving mission — which is powered by more than 90% volunteers.”
The Red Cross also provided some numbers for their efforts in Michigan through 2020:
- assisted more than 1,200 families in response to local disasters, including house fires;
- helped an estimated 5,016 military members, veterans and their families; and
- trained nearly 27,952 community members in health and safety from July 2019 through June 2020.
In Michigan, approximately 192,595 pints of blood and more than 42,623 units of platelets were donated through the Red Cross from donors.
