Ag Outlook for 2-9-2021:
If you grow fruit or winter wheat, the return of a Polar Vortex can spell trouble.
Most people recall the effect on heating bills and just getting around as one settled in over Michigan in late January, 2019. That year’s Polar Vortex brought 8 days of far colder than average readings along with 26 inches of snow at the Grand Rapids weather station.
The phenomenon happens when low pressure which normally remains around the North Pole gets disrupted sending a shot of cold air southward – this time toward us. Earlier this year the target was Siberia.
Hopefully, cloud cover will remain in place much of the time keeping nighttime radiation cooling down, somewhat. But early morning conditions will still offer a shock to us – and all living things.
