KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A long-time Kalamazoo business is saying goodbye as Family Video has announced it is closing all of its remaining stores across the nation. The location on Gull Rd. is among 58 stores that will end operations in Michigan. Store Manager Michelle Jenson told WKZO that their official going out of business sale began Wednesday which is also the final day for any rentals. Liquidation sales will continue until the end of February or until everything is gone.
The rumors are true. We are closing. It’s heartbreaking to have to say goodbye to you all. We love you all. Thanks for supporting us! – Michelle Jenson via Facebook
Along with the consumer shift to streaming and other services to watch movies, the company says that COVID-19 also had a major impact on the business due to less people physically coming into stores and a lack of new movie releases during much of 2020.
At its peak, Family Video had 800 stores in the United States. Just two months ago, Family Video had launched a #SaveTheVideoStore campaign, which included selling T-shirts with the slogan printed on it.
