GOBLES, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A stolen vehicle that had crashed in a tree eventually led Van Buren County police to a meth lab, where they made two arrests Sunday.
Around 4:30 p.m., Van Buren County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to an unknown crash in the 27000 block of 6th Ave in Pine Grove Township. Deputies found a vehicle had left the roadway and struck a tree, but no one was inside the vehicle. They followed footprints up to a nearby residence, after the vehicle was confirmed stolen out of Kalamazoo.
When deputies followed the footprints up to the house, they noticed a strong chemical odor coming from near the garage. then followed the footprints in fresh snow behind the garage and located a suspicious bag recently placed up against the garage. Deputies opened the bag and found an active one pot methamphetamine lab inside.
Deputies contacted the Van Buren County Narcotics Unit for assistance with the methamphetamine lab and the investigation. Detectives were able to conduct an interview at the house where the meth lab was located and were able to identify the three subjects that were involved in the crash with the stolen vehicle. Detectives were given a possible address and vehicle to look for in the village of Gobles. They saw two male subjects leave the residence and drive to the Village Express gas station in Gobles.
When detectives came up to the vehicle, both the driver and passenger refused to get out of the vehicle for several minutes. The driver finally unlocked the door and both the passenger and driver were again advised to step out of the vehicle. Police say the passenger became aggressive and started to fight with detectives. Detectives were able to get the passenger into custody after a brief struggle.
A search of the vehicle yielded a baggie of methamphetamine, along with open containers that the passenger was drinking in plain sight. The 31 year old male and 22 year old male were lodged for possession of methamphetamine and resisting officers at this time and the investigation into the meth lab will be submitted once the investigation is complete.
The 25 year old female is still out standing in this investigation and Detectives are still attempting to locate her at this time.
The Van Buren County Narcotics Unit is composed of officers from the Van Buren County Sheriffs Office and the South Haven Police Department.
