KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo man who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in a shooting death earlier this year will serve one year in jail.
Previously, 23-year-old John Jacob Spangenberg was accused of shooting 21-year-old McKenna Dutkiewicz at his apartment during a gathering earlier this summer.
The incident took place in the 1300 block of Jack Pine Way.
Dutkiewicz later died from injuries caused by the gunshot. Spangenberg told police that he thought the gun was unloaded at the time of the shooting.
In November, Spangenberg pleaded guilty in the case, according to a report from WOOD TV.
Monday, Spangenberg was sentenced to one year in jail with 194 days served. He will also have to complete 500 hours of community service and serve four years of probation, according to WOOD TV.
Dutkiewicz, a 2017 graduate, had spent two years at Eastern Michigan University and was planning on transferring to Western Michigan University.
