KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Despite having to cancel their free Thanksgiving dinner due to a lack of finds, God’s Kitchen of Michigan is going ahead with its free Christmas dinners in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek next week.
The dinner in Kalamazoo will be served Wednesday, December 16 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Wesley Foundation, 2350 Ring Road North, near the Western Michigan University campus. Free rides will be available to and from the event via Metro Transit.
A total of 300 dinners and toys will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Curbside pick up is available to individuals and families arriving by automobile.
The menu will consist of fried chicken, honey ham, steak, mashed potatoes, cheesy broccoli, cake, and bottled water.
“Due to the Michigan Department of Healh and Human Services extension of their COVID-19 restrictions, we have elected to consolidate the distribution of food and toys to one location,” said Pastor William Stein, Chairman of God’s Kitchen of Michigan.
“By limiting the number of people assembled at one location, and restricting the number of dinner guests entering the building, we will be able to safeguard against the spread of COVID-19.”
Santa and Mrs. Claus will hand out toys while supplies last. However, social distancing requirements will be observed.
Cash donations are still needed for the annual Christmas dinner. Donations can be mailed to God’s Kitchen of Michigan, P.O. Box 2632, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49003, or online at http://www.godskitchenofmichigan.org/donate.
God’s Kitchen of Michigan is a hunger-relief charity servicing Battle Creek and Kalamazoo.
God’s Kitchen of Michigan and Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church are also partnering to serve free Christmas dinners in Battle Creek’s Washington Heights.
On Tuesday, December 15, the soup kitchen will serve a traditional holiday dinner at their First United Methodist Church meal site in downtown Battle Creek. A second meal will be served simultaneously at Macedonia MB Church. A total of 100 dinners will be transported to Macedonia to be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis from 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m.
