KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Kalamazoo has selected a California-based consultant to conduct a Use-of-Force Study of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, in the wake of incidents this past spring and summer.
The consulting firm OIR Group, led by a former federal civil rights prosecutor, specializes in the independent review of police practices.
Kalamazoo City Manager Jim Ritsema says the external, independent review will allow them to evaluate KDPS’s use of force during the protests in the city and its impact on related criminal activity, including the KDPS’s decision to use non-lethal munitions May 30 to June 2, and the incidents surrounding the Proud Boys’ visit to Kalamazoo August 15, 2020.
The review will cost the city $75,000.
