KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Monday, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) released a public statement regarding Veterans Day.
The statement can be read in full below:
“On Wednesday, November 11, 2020, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) would like to pause and express our deepest gratitude and sincere appreciation to our veterans for their brave and selfless service to our country. This day was originally known as Armistice Day in 1919, which marked the first anniversary of the ending of WW1.
In 1938, it became a nationally observed holiday, and in 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day. This day is an acknowledgement for those who have served their country honorably, in war time and in peace time.
At KDPS, we are proud to stand with Veterans and their families. We want to say thank you for the extraordinary sacrifices you and your families have made on our behalf toward the pursuit of freedom, liberty, and peace.
KDPS has a long-standing tradition of supporting our Public Safety Officers who are veterans that have served in any branch of the armed services. Qualities such as teamwork, leadership, diversity and inclusion, honor, integrity, loyalty, duty, and respect are all attributes valued by this organization, and for which the Chief values and holds in high regard.
We have and will continue to recruit those who have served in the military as they have shown to be highly qualified and capable candidates. Attached is a historical photo taken of some of the veteran men and women who have served this community as a Public Safety Officer.”
That statement comes following the recent cancellation of the Kalamazoo County Veterans Day event that was going to take place at the Robert L. Cook Veterans Memorial Plaza in Rose Park.
It also comes as KDPS has recently opened its Public Safety Officer application process on November 2. More information on how to apply can be found here.
