KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Absentee ballots have been a game changer in the race for the 61st district seat in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Republican Bronwyn Haltom was leading through most of election night and into the morning, but once Portage’s absentee ballots were counted around 4 a.m. Wednesday, Democrat Christine Morse took the lead.
Kalamazoo County Clerk Tim Snow says all the Portage votes are now in. Morse has 31,885 votes and Haltom has 27,089.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — During the November 3 General Election, two candidates are opting for the seat of the 61st District, which encompasses the city of Portage, the villages of Schoolcraft and Vicksburg, and the townships of Oshtemo, Texas, Prairie Ronde and Schoolcraft.
Democrat candidate Christine Morse is the current Kalamazoo County Commissioner of District 9 and “a mother, spouse of a Navy Veteran, former attorney, and cancer survivor,” according to her website.
Morse received her bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and has a law degree from Wayne State University Law School. She is also endorsed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
The Republican candidate, Bronwyn Haltom, attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College and then transferred to the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor’s degree. Haltom owns a small marketing firm and also worked with the Trump administration as a political appointee in the White House as the western regional political director.
Both are campaigning for the seat currently held by State Representative Brandt Iden, who is term-limited for his position.
Earlier this month, WKZO hosted a live debate between Morse and Haltom, where both discussed various issues concerning Michigan residents. Those topics include unemployment, healthcare, Capitol security and more.
