LANSING, MI — The ownership group of 536 Regal cinemas in the U.S. said Monday the theater chain will close all locations for now and consider reopening at a later date. Some 45,000 employees will be affected.
There are two Regal theaters in Michigan, one in Lansing at the Lansing Mall and another in Walled Lake, according to the company’s website. Theaters in southern Michigan are set to reopen this weekend.
Cineworld Group Plc says that with major markets such as New York closed and no guidance on when they will reopen, “studios have been reluctant to release their pipeline of new films.”
Without new releases, the company can’t give customers “the breadth of strong commercial films necessary for them to consider coming back to theaters against the backdrop of COVID-19,’’ according to a press release.
