BENTON HARBOR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Police in Benton Harbor announced this week that an ongoing partnership with the Michigan State Police (MSP) will be extended by two weeks.
All relevant parties have agreed to extend the assignment of the added six troopers and one sergeant in this partnership, officially known as the Secure Cities Partnership (SCP). According to officials, Benton Harbor is part of Michigan’s SCP, which is an initiative developed by the MSP to address crime through a comprehensive system of “smart justice” that recognizes the connection between enforcement and community engagement.
MSP says it will continue to offer support to the area if necessary, beyond the scheduled end date (October 3) of the added troopers.
The partnership began in August, with several reports of arrests made through the month. Additional arrests have been made through September, as well.
During the fifth and six week of additional resources, police say nine handguns were seized during traffic stops. Occupants were also found in possession of cocaine, ecstasy, scales, and a large amount of suspected drug money ($6,000).
In addition, several occupants were taken into custody for various original charges and warrants.
Arrests were made for the following:
- One – parole violation and resisting and obstructing
- Two – carry concealed weapon
- Three – operating while intoxicated
- Four – misdemeanor warrant
- Five – felony warrants, including two charged with domestic violence 3rd , one carrying concealed weapon, one home invasion, and one armed-robbery
- Five – multiple felony violation charges, including one for resisting and obstructing and receiving stolen firearm; one for felony drug possession and probation violation; one for carrying concealed weapon; felony firearm, resisting and obstructing, operating while intoxicated, flee and elude 4th, and
possession of firearm while intoxicated; one for carrying concealed weapon warrant (Arkansas), new carrying concealed weapon charge, receiving stolen firearm, and felony firearm; one for carrying concealed weapon, receiving stolen firearm, felony firearm, and local warrants.
No further information on the suspects arrested was immediately made available.
