KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is warning residents of a new phone scam circulating in the area.
Fuller says that this is similar to a previous scam where the caller was impersonating Fuller himself. The caller said that they would be arrested if they did not pay $1,000 in Blue Dot cards. Another scam actually “spoofed” the number of the Sheriff’s office, making it appear as though the call came from a legitimate source.
In this new scam, Fuller says the callers are continuing to impersonate staff of the Sheriff’s office.
“Right now, they’re using Lieutenant Jeff Baker’s name and scaring people,” Fuller told WKZO Wednesday. “In fact, they even called the spouses of one of our staff members, who just walked down the hall and said, ‘are you coming to arrest my spouse?’ And of course, no.”
Fuller says the best way to avoid getting scammed is to hang up the call, or don’t answer an unfamiliar number.
“If this person calls you and they sound very convincing, hang up on them,” Fuller said.
At a state level, all scam calls can be reported to the Office of the Attorney General.
