DETROIT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Thursday’s Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins series opener was postponed to protest racial injustice following the recent shooting of Jacob Blake in Wisconsin.
The two teams joined a growing movement in professional sports to suspend play as other MLB teams and playoff competition in the NBA and NHL stopped in response to Blake’s shooting.
Earlier this week, the Detroit Lions cancelled practice to address the media about inequality.
The Tigers-Twins game will be made up today as part of a day-night doubleheader today.
The Tigers shut down pitching prospects Alex Faedo and Matt Manning for the season as both deal with right forearm strains. Faedo missed summer camp with the issue and he and Manning have been working out at Detroit’s alternate training site in Toledo.
General Manager Al Avila said the decision to end the year for both pitchers was made as a precaution due to the shortened season.
