KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Monday, MLive reported that a hit-and-run suspect will be back in court a second time after charges had previously been dropped.
Officials say 19-year-old Marquisha Canda is accused of running over 46-year-old Anita McClendon back in April. She had been laying down in the road before being run over in the vehicle driven by Canda, who left the scene.
It was unknown why McClendon was laying in the road to begin with. The charges had been dropped earlier in August, due in part to the pathology report not being presented as evidence.
In other words, Judge Kathleen Hemingway felt that there was insufficient evidence to connect the death of McClendon to being run over by Canda, which partly influenced her decision.
Charges were reissued in the case four days later, and Canda reportedly turned herself in on Monday, August 24. County Prosecutor Jeff Getting told MLive that more evidence will be provided, including the pathology report.
Judge Richard Santoni has also been assigned to the case going forward.
MLive reported that Canda’s next court date is scheduled for September 8. She is facing charges involving operating a vehicle without a license causing death and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in impairment or death.
